Presenter(s):
Haley Sparks, Director of Community and Organizational Development

Target Audience: All External Affairs Staff

We have witnessed monumental changes and transitions across many communities in these early months of 2025. Such shifts can leave us feeling somewhat uncertain and unstable as we work towards a better future for all. In pursuit of more stable ground, in addition to our goals of developing as an organization and community, you are invited to our next community offering: a series of workshops based on the insights offered in Michelle Obama’s The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times. In these Overcoming in Uncertain Times workshops, we will come together in virtual forums to discuss key strategies to uplift and ground ourselves in a variety of uncertain contexts.

Such topics will include:
1) Small habits to make big change
2) Overcoming fear
3) Recognizing and using your unique skills to make a contribution
4) Intentionally building community
5) Strength and skills stemming from uncertain times

Our first workshop will be loosely based on Chapter 1.

Reading the book is not required for participation in the workshop series. Everyone is welcome!

For those who would like to read along in The Light We Carry, there will be copies of the book for you to pick up in a location of your choosing:
- James West Alumni Center: North Side front desk on floor 1.
- Mullin Management Commons: Suite 315 or 312.
- Wilshire-Glendon: 15th Floor. 8 am-12 pm and 1 pm-5 pm. Please contact Megan Lemmon at mlemmon@support.ucla.edu should you need any assistance.
